The Difference Between Soccer and Football
Association football, also known as simply football, is an athletic team sport played by a spherical ball containing nine players. It is played by more than 250 million players across 200 nations and dependencies, making it the most popular sport in the world. The name association football (English) or football (Gaelic) is sometimes used interchangeably. The game is named after a legendary football player who is the current international sports star, Wayne Rooney. The game is very popular in many countries around the globe, but originated in England.
To play football, you must wear protective gear such as a helmet, gloves and padding. The ball is normally played on a wide-open field with the goal being to score the most points, commonly referred to as points in American football. The ball is normally played on grass, but may also be played on an artificial surface such as turf. Professional teams play against other professional teams in order to win. Due to the nature of the game, football is usually played during school holidays or when school is out, allowing parents to send their children to and watch a high quality sport, while earning some college credits in the process.
The term football is derived from the English word “fuss”. Fuss is usually used to describe something that is unnecessary or unimportant. In this case, the game of football is no different. Although football may not seem like an important sport compared to other sports, the history of the game makes it one of the most significant sports to ever surface in the sporting world.
The origin of football can be traced all the way back to the Ancient Olympics. There, men would throw large stones as part of their athletic events. Those stone throwers eventually came to be called “footballs” and eventually became the modern game we know today as “rugby” and “league” football. Since football was first played as a contact sport between men, it developed a sort of softball like feel.
Currently there are two different codes for football. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the governing body for football in the United States. The other, International Federation of Football Associations (Federation) is the governing body for soccer. Both of these leagues divide the United States into ten conferences with the conference title corresponding to the different divisions of the leagues. Each conference has its own rules for how to play football. Each division has its own playoff format.
Currently, the biggest hurdle to cross when it comes to football is the lack of a governing body. Because of this, there are a variety of different opinions when it comes to how the rules for soccer and football should be dealt with. This has resulted in an influx of different opinions when it comes to how the game should be played. With more opinions being given about football than about any other sport, the future of football is bright with many teams, colleges, and even families signing up to play the sport.
